The RHS Cardiff Flower Show 2011

The Royal Horticultural Society kicks off its annual flower shows with a spectacular event in Cardiff on April 8th to 10th, 2011. Held in the centre of the city at Bute Park, which surrounds Cardiff Castle, the setting is particularly beautiful with the magnificent castle as the backdrop. It is an eagerly anticipated event where many new plants from top nurseries will be displayed along with show gardens from designers and societies.

Visiting the RHS Cardiff Flower Show

The event is easily accessible by road, rail, air and water transport. If you choose to drive, there is plenty of parking available as well as a number of useful signs directing you to the venue.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for £8 or on the day for £10 each. Children up to the age of 16 will be admitted free of charge. Bookings can be made over the phone; Internet and special rates are available for group bookings.

Animals are not permitted into the show however assistant dogs will be permitted with their owners. The weather has been known to put a damper on things so it would be wise to review the weather forecasts for the day and come appropriately dressed. There will be plenty of food available at temporary catering units at different locations in the park. They will be serving an array of hot and cold drinks and snacks, like tea, coffee, sandwiches, pastries and doughnuts. There will also be a bar serving alcoholic drinks.

Finally at the entrance, there will be a crèche where you can store any plants or materials you have purchased from the product stalls.

The Best Show Garden

At the epicentre of the event is the Best Show Garden award in which a host of competitors including Welsh Garden Societies, nurseries and designers compete. This year there are even more show gardens presented by new entrants hoping to find a place in the top list of awards.

The Schools Wheelbarrow Competition

A unique dimension to the event is the intriguing wheelbarrow competition, which offers an opportunity for young school-going gardeners to present their designs that are grown on wheelbarrows. A total of 73 groups of children have submitted their entries which are expected to be quite a crowd puller for the event.

Special Events

Apart from the impressive displays there are a number of special events. One of the intriguing shows is called Befriending Bees where designer Lynn Allbutt will make a presentation about beekeeping barefoot. Another popular demonstration will be the raised beds presentation where visitors will gain an insight on how to use these to grown flowers and home produce. Finally the bridal display feature is sure to be favourite among flower lovers as students from the Neath Port Talbot College display some inspiring bridal inspired arrangements.

The show promises to be an exciting and informative event, one that the entire family will enjoy. So make sure you make your plans in advance and look forward to an enjoyable weekend.
