Our Spent Mushroom Compost is derived from mushroom farms where the product has been used to produce 1 crop of mushrooms. Here is the process from start to finish.
Product Intake
A variety of products can be used to produce mushroom compost. Primarily wheat straw, horse and chicken manure will be blended to start the process. Here you can see the products arriving from different farms.
Product Preparation
These three products are entered into this machine to be chopped, mixed at pre-defined proportions and wetted. They will also add lime or gypsum at this stage
Once the material has been mixed it is then placed in windrows inside.
Composting Process
Once in windrows, the aerobic bacterial breakdown starts and the temperature rises to 58-60 degrees C
After a few days the temperature is reduced by increasing the air flow or turning the windrow. The temparature is kept at about 40 degree centigrade for about a further 2 weeks and this completes the pasteurisaton stage. Here you can see the controls and fans which maintain the correct temperature
If the windrows become dry, water will be added. This process results in a sterile, stable product ready for going into the mushroom beds
Growing
The mushroom spawn is added to the compost and thoroughly mixed. The compost is placed onto the mushroom beds and covered by the casing (a 1" layer of peat). Within a short time the mushrooms will appear and are ready for picking within about 3 weeks
Spent Mushroom Compost
Finally after the mushrooms have been harvested, the compost and casing is removed from the sheds and composted for one last time outside. The product is then bagged ready for dispatch to our customers.
