What is TOP DRESSING and why is it the best thing you could do to your lawn?

To get the definitive answer we asked our MASTER GREENKEEPER John Quinn of greenmaster.co.uk

"The main purpose of topdressing is to improve drainage through the introduction of Horticultural/Sports Grade Sand to the roots. IT MUST BE Sports Grade Sand, I cringe every year when I hear TV gardening pundits enthusing about "sharp sand" usually accompanied by shots of them dumping liberal amounts of the aforementioned sharp sand on top of the lawn with a shovel"

"The second main reason for topdressing, especially on lighter sandy soils and poor, old lawns is the addition of non-mineral, slow release nutrition, for example compost or peat. This helps to break down the thatch layer. DO NOT use loam or clay as the fine particles can undo the drainage effect you are trying to achieve."

We have listened to the experts and created this great product. In the interests of fertility and the environment we incorporate compost rather than peat in all our top dressings

We have two grades of top dressing available.

50:50 adds more fertility to poor lawns

80:20 adds more drainage to compacted lawns or heavy soils

Both are created using compost, graded to 3mm, and the highest quality, double washed, USPGA Specification, Sports Grade Sand. The resultant mix has a pH of around 6.5, and a low content of fine particles, perfect for the bulk of grass species and soil types.

One of the real benefits from Top dressing with our peat-free materials is that the beneficial bugs that are produced during the composting process have the effect of controlling some of the diseases that can attack your grass.

And as if that wasn't enough, our product contains a natural Nitrogen and Iron content which is released slowly and gives a long term, greening effect.

If your area is smaller than this don't worry, use it in your flowerbeds as a quality soil conditioner, or store dry for the spring when a second application will give astonishing grass colour next summer.
