Variety Of Uses
Our customers use Plum Slate in a variety of ways. It can be used on driveways and paths, but by far its best use is as a mulch. When used in conjunction with our weed control fabric, it creates a beautiful, scree type effect. It is a very natural, upland type look. It can be carefully arranged round the stems of plants, including annuals.

How to utilise Plum Slate with fabric around individual annuals
To do this, first prepare your ground by digging in manure or compost, and removing as much weed root as you can. Then lay the weed control fabric out and cover with 2” of Plum Slate (1 tonne will spread over 12-14 square metres). If you have perennials or shrubs already planted, then cut the fabric to fit. This is easily done with a pair of scissors. Use the same technique you use to cut carpet around the water pipes that go up to your radiators. You can then carefully place the Plum Slate round these plants making sure that the Plum Slate doesn’t touch the stems (let the fabric do that).
For annuals (even from seed if you plant individual seeds!) pull back Plum Slate, cut weed control fabric with a 8” cross, plant your plants into centre of area and bring fabric back across, carefully arranging Plum Slate around base. For seed establishment, leave the weed control fabric open for two weeks to allow germination, then replace fabric and Plum Slate as above.

Retains Moisture
Remember that mulching like this is the best way to keep your soil damp. Plum slate is really good for this because it lets the water straight through when it rains and only holds a very small amount on the surface
