Their berries are referred to as sloes and develop from a blue/black matt berry to a black shiny berry. This is a great feeding source for birds but can be made into sloe gin.GrowingBlackthorn, like Hawthorn, will grow on nearly any soil or location and is in fact even better for exposed coastal locations or heavy clay soils than Hawthorn. Avoid full shade if possible.PruningBlackthorn should be pruned in the summer and early autumn months.
